In this short course for Advanced Clinical Practitioners, you’ll learn to identify, assess, and plan individualised care for patients with mental health or cognitive problems.
This is a blended course, combining online learning with a work-based placement and a final in-person assessment.
You’ll learn from experienced frontline clinicians, keen to share their expertise and support you in developing your own practice.
With their guidance, you’ll enhance your understanding of:
- special health requirements for patients with mental health or cognitive conditions
- challenges these patient groups may face in trying to access healthcare
- ethical and legal issues relevant to care decisions
- essential information about common psychiatric disorders.
Learn to complete a Section 47 certificate
If you’re a nurse and require this for your role, you’ll also develop the ability to complete Section 47 paperwork under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000.
Who can join this mental health care course?
This course is open to all Advanced Clinical Practitioners who:
- require increased knowledge in the care of patients with mental health conditions
- may require additional safeguards, including Section 47 AWI authorisation, and
- live within easy travel distance of Aberdeen.
Adults with Incapacity (AWI) training
The AWI component of the course is only for nursing professionals, and only if you require it for your clinical role.

What you’ll study
In this blended course, you’ll learn online and via a work-based placement, with an in-person assessment at the end of the course.
You’ll examine the access and provision of care for patients with mental health problems or those who are considered to be in a vulnerable group.
You’ll develop your skills and critical awareness in:
- the recognition of such patient groups
- the need for expert assessment for these patient groups
- how to facilitate such access
- how to assess and initiate Section 47 if required.

- Common mental health disorders
- Primary care management and psychological approaches to common mental disorders
- Psychopharmacology
- Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders

- Suicide and violence risk assessment
- Legal aspects of psychiatry, guidelines, and policies.
Content advice
The theoretical content of this course focuses on mental health conditions. There will be discussion of sensitive topics including suicide, eating disorders, and major psychiatric conditions that would be managed in secondary care.
This content advice is here to prepare you for the discussion of these topics. The classroom will be made a space to engage sensitively with this content in an academic context. Confidential and impartial support is also available from the Student Advice and Support Office.

How you’ll study
Blended learning
This course is delivered flexibly via blended learning. It blends online and work-based learning with in-person assessment.
Teaching days
You’ll have one full online teaching day per week as part of the course, typically on a Friday.
Your teaching day will consist of:
- a live online teaching session
- video-lecture viewing and small-group work
- a live Q&A session, where you can clarify any issues from the material studied that day.
Live attendance is highly desirable, but these sessions will be recorded for you to view online after they have taken place.
Online learning
Your online teaching elements are delivered through MyAberdeen, our online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It holds all the materials, tools and support you’ll need in your online studies. Take a look around MyAberdeen.
You can access your learning materials on computer, smartphone and laptop, 24 hours a day. You’ll find a range of resources available, including:
- videos and video lectures to stream or download
- live online sessions
- slide shows
- quizzes
- reading materials
- discussion boards with your tutors and peers
- the online resources of our award-winning Sir Duncan Rice Library.
Work-based placement
The course will include 30 hours of placement within Mental Health Services and can be in a range of environments across NHS Grampian. This will be arranged with your course coordinator around your working requirements.
Adults with Incapacity (AWI) training
The AWI element of the course is only for nursing professionals who require this skill for their clinical role. This element is delivered online by NHS Education Scotland, with a final work-based assessment.
Your tutors
This course is delivered by our School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition.
You’ll learn from a team of psychiatrists and specialists in mental health.
The main assessment for this course will take place in person at Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen, on the last Friday of the course.
You’ll be assessed via an oral presentation of a case study focusing on mental health.
Adults with Incapacity (AWI) assessment
If you require accreditation to complete AWI paperwork, you’ll also need to complete an AWI assessment.
This includes an observed capacity assessment and can be carried out in practice or during your work placement.
The course totals approximately 150 hours of study and assessment time. That’s around 10 – 15 hours per week.
This is an indicative guide to the time required for a typical student at this level to achieve the learning outcomes, including the AWI component. This includes time for independent study, as well as your teaching, work-based placement, and assessments.
The course is designed so that you undertake the teaching on a Friday and have the remainder of the week for self-directed study.
Your teaching materials are available in MyAberdeen, 24/7, so you can also log in and study them when it suits you.
Live online sessions
Live sessions take place at the start and end of each of your weekly teaching days, which is typically on a Friday.
Sessions are scheduled to last for around one hour. Session dates and times will be organised at the start of the course. Your course coordinator will consider everyone’s circumstances and time zones before setting up live session times.
Sessions will be recorded so that you can access them after they have taken place. While live attendance is not mandatory, it is highly desirable.
Work-based-placement hours
The course will include 30 hours of placement within Mental Health Services and can be in a range of environments across NHS Grampian. Timing of this can be flexible, to fit around your other commitments, and will be organised with your course coordinator towards the start of the course.
Activities at fixed times
There will be some activities scheduled at a fixed time, such as online meetings with your tutor and your in-person assesments.
Our first-class support structure will ensure that you aren’t alone in your studies. You’ll have contact with your coordinator via email, MyAberdeen and Microsoft Teams. You can use social media and discussion boards to chat with your fellow students too.

To view your online course materials, you’ll need access to:
A computer (PC, laptop or Mac) operating on either:

Most teaching materials are smartphone- and tablet-friendly. But we recommend a proper laptop or desktop for completing assignments comfortably.
Reliable internet access

Speakers or headphones
- We recommend a headset with built-in microphone and earphones if you’re likely to study in an environment with background noise.

We’ll give you access to Office365 applications. This means you can use online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and install these programs on up to five personal devices.
If your course requires specialist software, we’ll provide you with access to this and a licence that lasts throughout your studies.
