What you’ll study
In this course, you’ll learn about a range of advanced mathematical optimisation techniques used in engineering analysis.
These techniques can be applied across a range of engineering disciplines.
Techniques of mathematical optimisation are used as the basis for much engineering synthesis and the solution of inverse problems.
You’ll cover general techniques for the analysis of a given problem, and how to break this down into its component parts.
These techniques are required to build any computer software program, and so these are important generic skills that can be applied to any industry area.
This will give you the ability to develop your own computer programs, whether in optimisation or in any other topic relevant to your field.
You’ll also learn to carry out a range of practical exercises using MATLAB software.
Topics you may cover include:
- general techniques of mathematical optimisation and minimisation
- methods for one variable
- methods for many variables
- gradient methods
- constrained optimisation
- discipline-specific applications
- modelling data using non-linear least squares, Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm
- local and global optimisation
- inverse problems, and
- regularisation.
By the end of this mathematical optimisation course, you’ll be able to...
-
Perform the mathematical method of Lagrange multipliers for optimising a given equation for equality constraints or a number of inequality constraints.
-
Perform the method of Least Squares optimisation on a specified model function for a given number of data points so that the optimal parameters for the model function can be found.
-
Design and develop a flowchart to give a graphical representation of a given algorithm, combined with relevant pseudocode.
-
Build computer programs using engineering and mathematical concepts tailored to your field.
-
Understand and carry out root-finding approaches, such as bisection method or Newton-Raphson, to a specified function using hand calculations.
-
Understand the methods of genetic algorithms and simulated annealing, and how given problems can be solved using these approaches.
-
Use MATLAB software to solve advanced engineering problems.
