We’ll guide you through each stage of the process, from learning about data sources, to data analysis and presentation, enabling you to apply quantitative methods confidently in practice.

What you’ll study

In this bespoke online course, you’ll learn how to carry out the main steps of quantitative research, from learning about datasets, to analysing and presenting data, and writing up your findings.

You’ll develop your skills in working with statistics to interpret and present findings in useable ways.

Through expert-led online lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on assignments, you’ll build your practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge.

You’ll also be given access to SPSS software to learn how to confidently handle and interpret quantitative data.

Your teaching

This course is taught at Masters level.

In this course, you’ll benefit from an online portfolio space for developing and showcasing your work, making your learning experience more comprehensive and flexible.

Your tutors

This course is delivered by the School of Social Science.

You’ll learn from an internationally experienced team of academics and social scientists.

You’ll have a dedicated course tutor to provide you with individual guidance and personalised feedback.

This course is assessed online.

You’ll be assessed via two assignments, designed to help you demonstrate your new skills:

  • A project plan, where you’ll design a social science quantitative research project (worth 50% of your final course grade).
  • A reflective report, where you’ll reflect on the experience of applying research methods, data collection, and data analysis (also worth 50%).

The course totals approximately 150 hours of study and assessment time. That’s around 10 – 15 hours per week.

This is an indicative guide to the time required for a typical student at this level to achieve the learning outcomes. This includes time for independent study, as well as teaching and assessments.

You can largely set your own study hours each week to cover the materials. MyAberdeen is available 24/7, so you can log in and study when it suits you.

Activities at fixed times

There may be some activities scheduled for fixed times. This could include coursework and assessments with deadlines, or online meetings with your tutor. Otherwise, you can access and work through the course at your convenience.

Our first-class support structure will ensure that you aren’t alone in your studies.

You’ll have contact with your coordinator via email, MyAberdeen, Microsoft Teams, or phone. You can use social media and discussion boards to chat with your fellow students too.

Professor Joanne McEvoy

Joanne is a Professor of Politics and is Head of Social Science at the University of Aberdeen.

She holds a PhD from Queen’s University Belfast and started her academic career as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Joanne specialises in the politics of divided societies, combining research expertise with a commitment to engaging and inspiring students in political studies.

Speakers or headphones

  • We recommend a headset with built-in microphone and earphones if you’re likely to study in an environment with background noise.
  • A webcam is optional, but you may like to use one for some interactive sessions.

Software

We’ll give you access to Office365 applications. This means you can use online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneDrive and install these programs on up to five personal devices.

If your course requires specialist software, we’ll provide you with access to this and a licence that lasts throughout your studies.
