Biology: Online STEM Training is a flexible online short course.

It’s designed for teachers who currently teach, or wish to start teaching, Higher and Advanced Higher biology in secondary schools in Scotland.

The course, which is free for teachers in Scotland, will help you reflect on your current practice as a teacher, and improve your subject knowledge and skills in biology. It’ll boost your confidence in supporting pupils to apply new biology knowledge in real-world situations. You’ll learn to spark their interest in project work and experiments.

100% online, you can study anywhere you have internet access. Available 24/7, all year round, you can enrol when you like and study at your own pace.

What will I study?

You’ll work through five engaging topics areas. These have been chosen and developed by current teachers and University of Aberdeen academics:

  • Proteins and Enzymes
  • Molecular Biology
  • Designing Experiments
  • Higher and Advanced Higher Projects
  • Statistics

By the end of this course, you’ll...

  • Have greater subject knowledge in biology, and the confidence to communicate this effectively in your teaching.
  • Be able to spark student interest by applying your new knowledge to real-world biological contexts.
  • Know how to plan, design and run engaging experiments and projects with your pupils.
  • Be able to reflect on your teaching practice and identify further areas for improvement.

How will I study?

This course is delivered 100% online. You can study with us anywhere in the world and manage your study hours to suit you.

Your teaching is delivered through MyAberdeen, our online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It holds all the materials, tools and support you’ll need in your studies. Take a look around MyAberdeen.

You can access your learning materials on computer, smartphone and laptop, 24 hours a day. You’ll find a range of resources at your fingertips, including:

Am I ready?

This course has no formal entry requirements. You decide if it is suitable for you.

The course is delivered at Masters level. At this level, you’d usually have at least:

  • a 2:2 (second-class) degree
  • or relevant experience that supports this level of study.

You should have experience teaching Higher/Advanced Higher Biology, or be planning to teach Higher/Advanced Higher Biology, in a secondary school in Scotland.
